"She felt weak and utterly forlorn. She wished some help would come from outside. But in the whole world there was no help. Society was terrible because it was insane. Civilized society was insane". D.H. Lawrence: Lady Chatterly's Lover.
To which I can only answer myself that I long ago found out that I have to save myself cause "god is a concept by which we measure our pain" (J. L.) and in the larger picture of the universe, so what if we're all insane. Maybe we're supposed to be this way? Yin/yang ,darkness/light, honest/government liars-I wouldn't be here feeling weak or forlorn without them. It's a thought. And Lady Chatterly felt that way in English society after WWI. Maybe we are tilting at windmills.
